How Tōtika is revolutionising health and safety in the workplace

Too often, we hear stories about a worker doing a job in the workplace, and an incident occurs. Tom was working at a job when he slipped off the ladder he was using to reach the indoor units on the wall. He strained his arm while trying to support himself on the way down but thought it wasn’t serious, so he carried on working. His incident form was in the van on the other side of the site, and he needed to finish the job due to time constraints. Intending to complete the form later, he just soldiered on.

By the end of the day, he had entirely forgotten about it. It wasn't until a couple of days later, when he experienced pain and discomfort, that he remembered he hadn’t filed the original incident report. He knew this was now a more time-consuming process, as well as having to explain why this was not done on the day of the incident .If he’d had the PeopleSafe reporting APP on his mobile, a quick photo and a few taps to input details would have ensured the company was notified instantly, and automatically recorded the incident in their system.

The PeopleSafe app supports our company’s H&S reporting processes and ensures compliance with our Tōtika accreditation certification.

The gold standard in our industry

At White's, we are building a strong focus on health, mental well-being and safety, and ensuring our up-to-date industry training and accreditation are current.

However, accreditation compliance with health and safety requirements can be complex and time-consuming,

Recognised by major companies across New Zealand, Tōtika has become the gold standard in our industry. Its primary aim is to standardise health and safety requirements across different organisations, creating a level playing field and ensuring consistent safety standards.

Developed by Construction Health and Safety New Zealand (CHASNZ), Tōtika addresses a long-standing issue in our industry: the lack of a standardised pre-qualification process. Before Tōtika, many businesses like us had to navigate a maze of proprietary schemes, repeatedly proving our capabilities to each individual client. This not only wasted time and resources but also created inefficiencies.

Having our own dedicated Health and Safety and HR Wellness Manager, has transformed the approach to engaging safety and wellness in the workplace for everyone. The Totika requirement is not just another tick-box pre-qualification process, it's a framework that brings together all aspects of health and safety pre-qualification under one umbrella.

Tōtika accreditation:

  1. A universal standard for health and safety pre-qualification.
  2. A cross-recognition framework that acknowledges external audits.
  3. Recognition of established certifications like ISO 45001.

What sets Tōtika apart is its flexibility and comprehensive approach. The scheme uses approved service providers, such as Qualify365 and Impact Prequal to manage the accreditation process. This multi-provider approach ensures that companies like ours can choose the best fit for our needs while still adhering to the universal Tōtika standard.

Tōtika requires an annual prequalification  assessment, which ensures we're always at the forefront of safety practices.

Qualify365: Streamlining our accreditation process

As part of our Tōtika initiative, White's has partnered with Qualify365, one of the Tōtika-approved accreditation providers. This online platform has revolutionised how we manage our health and safety prequalification assessment which is supported by Qualified-approved assessors.

The prequalification application has an assessment overview and allows us access to evidence and documentation previously submitted and reports on the overall Tōtika score rating of 79% and recognised grading of Performing.

Integrated health and safety management systems

While Tōtika provides the accreditation framework, we've implemented a few complementary systems to ensure we meet and exceed safety standards in our daily operations.

Safe365: Auditing tool

Safe365 is a software assessment tool which provides a helicopter overview into our health and safety capability, and helps us understand our assessment progress and results. The Dashboard sees the areas where we have strong capabilities and areas for improvement.

PeopleSafe: Empowering our people

To complement our reporting systems, we've implemented the PeopleSafe Software App, a cloud-based solution for day-to-day health and safety reporting and one place to keep all your important safety information. Its user-friendly interface and mobile app support have been a hit with our busy team of technicians.

PeopleSafe has really made our safety reporting easy for our team. Our technicians can quickly report incidents or hazards, upload photos, and allows management to receive instant notifications. It's not just about compliance, it’s about creating a culture of safety and engagement.

PeopleSafe gives you one place to keep all your important safety information.

This system has been instrumental in helping us fulfil multiple requirements for our Tōtika prequalification accreditation, demonstrating our commitment to real-time safety management.
